ACCP recommends lung cancer screening with CT
The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) today recommended lung cancer screening with low-dose CT for patients at high risk of the disease. But the new guidelines closely follow more conservative recommendations for screening.

AATS: Low-dose CT outruns x-ray for lung cancer surveillance
In a study of more than 300 patients undergoing surveillance after lung cancer surgery, ultralow-dose CT far outperformed chest radiography for detecting cancer recurrence, concluded a study presented this week at the 2013 American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) meeting in Minneapolis.

Study finds Canadian radiology training plagued by 'isolationism'
A hidden culture of isolationism rules too many Canadian radiology training facilities, according to a new study in the European Journal of Radiology. Researchers found that four of the five academic centers surveyed were plagued by attitudes that negatively affected resident instruction.

ABIM: Board recalls threaten integrity of medicine
Stung by its own board recall controversy, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has joined the chorus of U.S. medical boards opposing the use of exam "recalls" to prepare for board exams. A new article in Mayo Clinic Proceedings condemns recalls as a practice that threatens the integrity of medicine.

Trauma CT is overkill for transferred patients
When trauma patients are transferred to an emergency department from another institution, a standard trauma CT protocol is the last thing you want to do, say researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Focused imaging based on the individual patient's medical history and clinical findings is more useful, they concluded.

Debates trump didactic lectures for educating residents
There's no better way to put an audience of residents to sleep than submit them to a traditional didactic lecture. But offer the same material to them as a lively debate and they'll sit up and take notice, say researchers from Pennsylvania, who are using the debate format as a key part of teaching.

Physician group sues to kill MOC recertification requirements
Calling physician recertification a "moneymaking scheme" that reduces patient access to doctors, a physician group has filed a federal suit against the American Board of Medical Specialties to kill programs that require doctors to continually renew their medical certifications, even if they have passed their board exams.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.

Ultrasound AC measures help detect liver steatosis
By Amerigo Allegretto
Attenuation coefficient (AC) measurements from ultrasound can help better detect hepatic steatosis and address interoperator agreement.
April 16, 2025
Ultrasound images depict a 56-year-old man with obesity (body mass index, 42) and steatosis (MRI-PDFF, 10.4%), who underwent ultrasound attenuation coefficient (AC) measurement due to participation in the present study. The unit displays color-coded confidence map (left) and AC map (on right) in side-by-side manner. The confidence map indicates quality of acquired AC signals and is set like traffic lights: green indicates good quality acquisition, yellow indicates warning, and red indicates low quality. Areas with low quality are left blank on the AC map. The image shows multiple circular ROIs placed at depths below the liver capsule of 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 cm. All ROIs are 3.5 cm in size. The confidence map threshold is set at 20%. AC measurements (in units of dB/cm/MHz) were extracted from all ROIs (excluding voxels without assigned color on the AC map) and decrease with greater ROI depth.
