Plaque volume on CCTA outperforms luminal narrowing for diagnosis
Total plaque volume at coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is a more reliable predictor of stenosis than luminal narrowing -- to the point where it could help differentiate between patients who have stenosis detected on CCTA and the smaller number with true flow-limiting lesions that need treatment, wrote researchers in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Clear scanner protocols can help avoid CT radiation mistakes
CT protocols are getting more complex with each new scanner generation, challenging even the best-run radiology departments. Fortunately, a comprehensive protocol plan can minimize the fuss -- and the potential for dangerous mistakes, according to a talk at the Virtual Symposium on Radiation Safety and Computed Tomography.

NLST update: CT sees twice the lung cancers of x-ray
A new analysis of data from the landmark 2011 National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) found that low-dose CT detected twice as many early-stage lung cancers as x-ray on initial screening, cementing CT's promise as a tool that can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20% or more, according to results published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

BMJ: Megastudy links pediatric CT to higher cancer rates
The largest study to probe the effects of ionizing radiation since the atomic bomb survivor studies shows that cancer incidence does rise among younger patients -- although only in small amounts -- in the years following their exposure to CT scans, according to an Australian article published May 21 in BMJ.

ATS: VA lung cancer study embraces broader screening criteria
A small CT lung cancer screening study of U.S. veterans found a higher rate of disease compared to the landmark National Lung Screening Trial, according to results presented at this week's American Thoracic Society (ATS) meeting in Philadelphia. The higher prevalence could fuel debate surrounding the criteria for patient selection.

Money worries fuel resident burnout
Radiology residents are prone to burnout even more than some other specialties, but their dilemma has less to do with the late nights, long hours, and strained interpersonal relationships than one might imagine. Instead, there is a familiar culprit: money, says a new study in Academic Radiology.

Technologists' CT training called woefully inadequate
CT might be the mainstay of medical imaging, but the basic curriculum for radiologic technologist training hardly mentions the modality, and training centers that do teach it are few and far between, according to a talk on May 10 at the Virtual Symposium on Radiation Safety and Computed Tomography.

CCTA for chest pain cuts costs, admissions
One of the largest studies yet comparing medical resource use and outcomes among chest pain patients found that coronary CT angiography (CCTA) reduced medical resource utilization compared to standard care, generating fewer hospital admissions and shorter emergency room stays, researchers reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Specialized iPad toolkit wins over resident trainees
A free Apple iPad packed with four years of radiology residency content and connectivity is a hit -- shockingly -- among residents who use the device as their main learning tool throughout training, researchers report in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.

Images of a 69-year-old man diagnosed with prostate cancer who had a history of endocrine therapy for two years. (a) The maximum intensity projection (MIP) image of F-18 FDG showed moderate radiotracer uptake in a thoracic vertebra. (e) The MIP image of Ga-68 DOTA-IBA demonstrated more lesions in the cervical vertebra and pelvis. (b) An osteoblastic lesion in the C3 vertebra right attachment (curved arrows) was negative on F-18 FDG (SUVmax = 2.0) and positive on Ga-68 DOTA-IBA (SUVmax = 8.7). (c) Another osteoblastic lesion in the T10 vertebra left side (arrowheads) was both positive on F-18 FDG (SUVmax = 5.2) and positive on Ga-68 DOTA-IBA (SUVmax = 35.0). (d) Osteoblastic lesions in bilateral ilium (dotted arrows and arrows) were negative on F-18 FDG (left: SUVmax = 1.4, right: SUVmax = 1.6) and positive on Ga-68 DOTA-IBA (left: SUVmax = 7.6, right: SUVmax = 8.7). Follow-up imaging three months later confirmed the presence of these bone metastases.
