MDCT: CT perfusion opens new windows in pancreatic disease
SAN FRANCISCO - Pancreatic imaging with CT perfusion (CTP) offers new ways to view the pancreas, unveiling dangerous tumors that are difficult to see with conventional CT and potentially offering more patients the chance for a cure, according to a talk at the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT (MDCT).

MDCT: Setting up a lung cancer screening program
SAN FRANCISCO - If your institution doesn't have a lung cancer screening program, it's probably time to set one up, according to a presentation on Tuesday at the annual International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT (MDCT).

MDCT: Future CT scanners will deliver more image, less noise
SAN FRANCISCO - Today's CT scanners can deliver, at best, about two-thirds of the signal and dose they output into their images. But continued progress toward sharper images and lower dose will require future generations of CT scanners to do better -- and within a few years they will, according to an opening-day talk at the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT (MDCT).

Circulation: Cancer risk low for children undergoing heart scans
Radiation from x-ray and CT scans of the heart is low and doesn't significantly raise the risk of cancer for young children being scanned, according to a study published on June 9 in Circulation that looked at nearly 14,000 heart scans.

Residents lack knowledge of radiation safety
Medical residents have limited knowledge of radiation safety, with just over half knowing that fluoroscopy could produce radiation-induced skin burns, for example. Radiology residents were only marginally more informed, according to survey results published in Academic Radiology.

Lung screening: Smokers will quit if results are bad enough
Smokers' willingness to kick the habit depends on how bad their CT screening results are, according to a new study in JNCI: Journal of the National Cancer Institute that examined smoking history data on nearly 15,500 participants in the National Lung Screening Trial.

ISCT returns to roots while planning for CT's future
The International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) is returning to where it left its heart -- in San Francisco. The City by the Bay will once again host radiology's most prominent meeting dedicated to CT, from June 9-14, with a few twists in store for both attendees and those watching the proceedings online.

CT screening of smokers with HIV finds few lung cancers
Despite high rates of tobacco use, active smokers with HIV do not appear to develop lung cancer at higher rates than the general population. In fact, lung cancer rates seem unusually low, according to a pilot screening study in the June edition of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.

Incidental findings on CT predict cardiovascular disease risk
Incidental findings on routine chest CT exams can be used to accurately predict risk for serious cardiovascular events, according to a just-published study in Radiology. Such findings could be preclinical signs of atherosclerosis and support an imaging-based model for risk prediction.

CT lung screening would cost Medicare $10B, study finds
A new model-based study of National Lung Screening Trial results predicts that implementing CT lung cancer screening in the Medicare population will identify more cancers -- and at earlier, curable stages -- but the costs to Medicare will be substantial.
