Richard Carson, PhD, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Paul C. Aebersold Award by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI).
Carson is being recognized for his contributions to quantitative PET imaging techniques and nuclear medicine instrumentation.
He is a professor of biomedical engineering and of radiology and biomedical imaging at Yale University and emeritus director of the Yale PET Center. His contributions include developing maximum likelihood expectation maximization algorithms for PET reconstruction, tracer kinetic modeling techniques, and synaptic density imaging with SV2A-PET. He also led the collaboration that produced the NeuroExplorer, an ultra-high performance brain PET imaging system.
The Aebersold Award recognizes outstanding achievement in basic science applied to nuclear medicine and has been presented since 1973. Carson has published more than 450 papers and given more than 200 invited lectures.
