The International Focused Ultrasound Society (IFUS) has launched as a new professional organization aimed at bringing focused ultrasound into mainstream clinical practice worldwide.
An expansion of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, the IFUS will focus on several areas, including patient advocacy, coding and billing, clinical guidelines, training and credentialing, and society and industry partnerships, according to an announcement.
Nir Lipsman, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario, and chair of the division of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, will serve as inaugural IFUS board chair.
Focused ultrasound is a noninvasive technology that uses high-frequency sound waves guided by real-time imaging to treat tissue deep in the body without incisions or radiation. More than one million patients have been treated to date, with over 180 indications in various stages of development and 35 regulatory authorizations worldwide, including 12 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the IFUS said.
