Fischer boosts earnings despite revenue dip

X-ray and mammography vendor Fischer Imaging reported revenues of $51 million in fiscal 2000, down 14.8% from normalized revenues of $59.9 million posted in fiscal 1999. Yet the Denver-based vendor moved back into the black for the period (end-December 31), posting net income of $2.1 million. In fiscal 1999, Fischer had a normalized net loss of $5.4 million.

In the fourth quarter, Fischer had revenues of $13.6 million, down 16.9% compared with the $16.3 million posted last year. The company had net income of $902,000, compared with net income of $398,000 in the fourth quarter of 1999. Fischer executives credited a new manufacturing strategy that has increased product quality, reduced product lead time, and improved gross margins as key factors in the improved financial performance.

(C) Recombined MLO and (D) CC images show an enhancing mass in the medial left breast (arrows). Biopsy revealed invasive lobular carcinoma. Size was 0.2 cm; tumor grade II/III; negative lymph nodes; and estrogen receptor–positive, progesterone receptor–positive, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative.

A normal mammogram confirmed by three-year radiologic follow-up illustrates reader-marked regions of interest (ROIs) during (A) unaided (round 1) and (B) artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted (round 2) reading. Each colored dot represents an ROI for recall by a human reader. Readers could mark more than one ROI per case, represented by multiple dots of the same color. During AI-assisted reading, the AI system displayed three visible prompts: two with suspicion of malignancy scores of 35% (left mediolateral oblique [L MLO] and craniocaudal [L CC]) and one with a suspicion of malignancy score of 10% (right craniocaudal [R CC]), shown as polygonal overlays.
