Coronary CTA results correlate with all-cause mortality
By
Eric Barnes
Contrast-enhanced coronary CT angiography (CTA) is the new cardiac imaging test on the block. But does it offer a prognostic benefit? To start answering this question, researchers at the Weill Cornell College of Medicine in New York City examined more than 1,000 patients with chest pain or other symptoms suggestive of coronary artery disease using 64-detector-row CT angiography, and followed them over 15 months.

FDG uptake correlates with survival, biomarkers in NSCLC
By
Eric Barnes
Researchers have long sought early prognostic clues for lung cancer patients -- ideally signs that are early enough and robust enough to alter patient management. On both counts it appears that researchers from the Netherlands may be on to something. The group performed serial PET/CT scans in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). They found that the maximum uptake of FDG correlated not only with increased survival, but with two plasma biomarkers.

New progress in multiple myeloma treatment; MDCT has edge in detection
By
Eric Barnes
Multiple myeloma is slowly giving way to new drugs that are extending and improving the quality of patients' lives. Better treatment options make accurate evaluation all the more important for patient management. And according to a new study, multidetector-row CT (MDCT) detects multiple myelomas slightly better than MRI, and significantly better than PET. Neither MRI nor MDCT can do the job alone, however.
