Optical coherence tomography (OCT) developer LightLab Imaging has signed a licensing agreement with Lantis Laser for the use of OCT in dentistry.
Under terms of an agreement announced today, Lantis Laser will pay an undisclosed sum to Westford, MA-based LightLab for use of its intellectual property covering OCT. The technology, originally developed from research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, uses broad-bandwidth light sources and advanced fiber optics to achieve image resolution in the range of 10-12 microns, according to LightLab.
Stanley Baron, CEO of Hewitt, NJ-based Lantis Laser, said OCT will be an important part of the dental office of the future, providing dentists with high-resolution images for use in dental restorations, the detection of caries, and the evaluation of periodontal disease.
LightLab CEO Paul Magnin said the agreement expands the strength of the firm's intellectual property and also advances the larger goal of establishing OCT as the sixth major imaging modality.
