SNMMI mourns passing of Twyla Bartel

The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging is mourning the passing of Twyla Bartel, DO, a nuclear medicine physician and longtime leader in the SNMMI who died on June 15, surrounded by her family.

Bartel earned her DO degree from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2001 and completed a nuclear medicine residency and PET/CT fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 2005, followed by a diagnostic radiology residency in Arkansas in 2014. She was dual board-certified in nuclear medicine and radiology and previously served as PET director and chief of nuclear medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences before becoming co-owner of Global Advanced Imaging in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Within the SNMMI, Bartel served as president of the PET Advisory Committee, vice-chair of the Women in Nuclear Medicine Committee, and president of the Academic and Correlative Imaging councils, among numerous other roles. She was recognized with the 2024 Women in Nuclear Medicine She Paved the Way Award, the 2023 SNMMI Distinguished Educator Award, and SNMMI Fellowship in 2021. She was also known for introducing flipped learning to the SNMMI Mid-Winter Meeting curriculum.
