ONC rules on EHR certification

The U.S. Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology has issued a final rule to establish a temporary certification program for electronic health record (EHR) technology.

The temporary certification program establishes processes that organizations will need to follow to be authorized by the National Coordinator to test and certify EHR technology, according to the final rule.

EHR technology certification is designed to ensure that EHR technology has been tested and includes the required capabilities for the technology to be used in a meaningful way and to improve the quality of patient care, according to the ONC.

Use of certified EHR technology is a requirement for providers to qualify for incentive payments under the provisions of the Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services soon will issue final regulations to implement the EHR incentive programs.
