GE, Maquet in MR-guided surgery collaboration

GE Healthcare and German operating room technology developer Maquet have collaborated to develop an MR-guided surgical suite.

The suite, which will be showcased at next week's 2004 RSNA meeting in Chicago, supports multiple applications, such as MR-guided neurosurgery, focused ultrasound, and X-MR vascular procedures, according to Waukesha, WI-based GE. It includes GE products such as its Signa 1.5-tesla and 3T Excite HD MR scanners, InstaTrak 3500 navigation system, Aestiva/5 MR anesthesia unit, and OEC 9800 vascular system.

GE said that the suite could be used as a standalone MR imaging center, a standalone operating room, or a combined MR-guided suite. Surgery can be performed on the Maquet MR/x-ray-compatible OR table system, with GE's Excite 1.5-tesla/3-tesla HD magnet employed for real-time imaging, GE said.

The MR surgical suite is pending Food and Drug Administration clearance; clearance and commercial launch is expected in mid-2005.
