Cardiac implants may be safer in MRI than thought
A new study published February 23 in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that implantable cardiac devices may be safer in the MRI environment than previously thought. In more than 1,000 patients who received nonthoracic scans, researchers found no device or lead failures, even with devices that were not certified for use with MR imaging.

Study gives thumbs-up to synthesized 2D DBT screening
A new study published February 21 in Radiology should put to rest any fears about the suitability of synthesized 2D digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for breast screening. Researchers who used the technology to screen more than 16,000 women found it had lower recall rates with no compromise in cancer detection.

PSMA-PET images. (A) Representative examples illustrate the variability in the total tumor volume (TTV) among patients stratified by the number of metastatic lesions. (B) Case examples demonstrate TTV segmentation across a range of TTV values. Notably, as the tumor volume increased, a visible decrease in radiopharmaceutical uptake by normal organs is observed, particularly in the salivary glands, kidneys, and liver (denoted by brackets), a phenomenon known as the “sink effect.” SUV = standardized uptake value.

DL model can aid in diagnosing myocardial ischemia
By Will Morton
A deep-learning (DL) model can automatically measure myocardial blood flow on CT scans to help diagnose myocardial ischemia.
April 29, 2025
Representative images from diagnostic analysis of deep learning (DL)-based CT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). (A-D) Representative images in a 51-year-old woman with stable angina at presentation. (A) Curved planar reformation and (B) three-dimensional maximum intensity projection images show severe stenosis of the opening left anterior descending artery (arrow). (C) Fractional flow reserve (FFR) determined with invasive coronary angiography helps confirm that there was no hemodynamic significance of the opening left anterior descending artery lesion (arrow). (D) Dynamic CT MPI provided functional information to identify hemodynamically significant stenosis with reference to invasive FFR. Myocardial blood flow (MBF) derived from DL-based CT MPI revealed the absence of decreased myocardial perfusion of the left anterior descending artery territory (the areas outlined in black represent the myocardium subtended by the left anterior descending stenosis, and the color bar is a graphical scale that maps MBF ranges). (E-H) Representative images in a 62-year-old man with exertional chest pain at presentation. (E) Curved planar reformation and (F) three-dimensional maximum intensity projection images show moderate stenosis of the middle left anterior descending artery (arrow). (G) FFR determined at invasive coronary angiography helps confirm that the middle left anterior descending lesion was hemodynamically significant (arrow). (H) Dynamic CT MPI provided functional information to identify hemodynamically significant stenosis with reference to invasive FFR. DL-based CT MPI showed a reduction in MBF within the middle and basal anterior wall of the left anterior descending artery territory (the areas outlined in black represent the myocardium with decreased perfusion, and the color bar is a graphical scale that maps MBF ranges). MBFDL = MBF derived from the DL model.

Patient examples of SPECT/CT and PET/CT RECIP 1.0. (A) SPECT and PET maximum-intensity projection (MIP) images in 74-year-old man with mCRPC. Serum PSA level at baseline was 449 ng/mL and slightly increased to 525 ng/mL after two cycles of Lu-177 PSMA. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score was 2 at baseline and increased to 3 after 2 cycles. The patient was classified by readers as RECIP-progressive disease on both SPECT and PET. Overall survival was 4.7 months. Two cycles of Lu-177 PSMA were administered. (B) SPECT and PET MIP images in 74-year-old man with mCRPC. Serum PSA level was 231 ng/mL at baseline and decreased to 12.5 ng/mL after 2 cycles of Lu-177 PSMA. ECOG score was less than 2 at baseline and after 2 cycles of Lu-177 PSMA. The patient was classified by readers as RECIP-partial response on both SPECT and PET. Overall survival was 14.3 months. Four cycles of Lu-177 PSMA were administered.
