Fewer lung cancer patients meet CT lung screening criteria
It's the ultimate irony: The success of public health efforts to get people to stop smoking is resulting in fewer individuals being eligible for CT lung cancer screening. In fact, some people are continuing to smoke just to be eligible for CT scans, according to new research in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Applying CAD twice to DBT improves performance at lower dose
Researchers from the University of Michigan have developed a new double-barreled approach to computer-aided detection (CAD) that uses two separate CAD algorithms on digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) exams. They believe the technique enables a high level of sensitivity with lower radiation dose.

CT scanner in the ED cuts patient waiting times
Substantial time can be saved by siting CT scanners in the emergency department (ED) rather than transporting patients to the radiology department hundreds of meters away, according to a new study in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Results of European CT screening trial can be widely applied
Individuals scanned with CT in the Nederlands-Leuvens Longkanker Screenings Onderzoek (NELSON) lung cancer screening trial had a similar risk of cancer as people who did not participate in the study, meaning the research can be generalized to a wider population.

Mobile stroke unit with CT scanner speeds care in Cleveland
A mobile stroke treatment unit with a CT scanner and medical personnel aboard is dramatically cutting time-to-treatment decisions for Cleveland stroke patients. Clot-busting drugs were provided in nearly half the usual time, according to a study presented at this week's 2015 International Stroke Conference.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.

FES-PET shows promise staging women with invasive lobular cancer
By Will Morton
Invasive lobular cancer is the second most common type of breast cancer and is difficult to detect, but FES-PET could aid in surgical staging.
August 20, 2025
A 58-year-old woman was diagnosed with ER-positive (Allred score 8) ILC in her right breast. Ultrasound and MRI found prominent lymph nodes in right axillary level I area, diagnosed as metastasis on ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. F-18 FES-PET/CT showed a positive mass in right breast (white arrow; SUVmax, 5.6) and multiple F-18 FES–positive lymph nodes in right axillary level I, II, and II/III junction areas (red arrows; SUVmax, up to 12.2). In addition, a small F-18 FES-positive lymph node was observed in the right second internal mammary area (red circles; SUVmax, 1.8). However, biopsy could not be performed because it was too small and not visible on ultrasound; the clinician decided to include internal mammary lymph node in treatment field for adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient underwent lumpectomy with ALN dissection, with five metastases being identified in 13 lymph nodes dissected, and is scheduled to receive adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy.
