Few ‘surprise’ patient bills are from radiologists, study finds
Out-of-network billing by radiologists – often referred to as “surprise billing” – dropped significantly beginning in 2007 and imaging claims are now almost completely in network.

PET/CT improves diagnostic biopsy rates in lung cancer patients
PET/CT imaging can serve as a metabolic guide to increase the accuracy of needle biopsies in patients with suspicious lung nodules.
January 22, 2024
Patient with extensive lung and pleural disease. (2a) The PET/CT was available prior to the biopsy showing heterogeneous F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake and delineating the most accessible area of increased metabolic activity. (2b) The biopsy was targeted to the area of increased activity area and was positive for malignant diagnosis. Image courtesy of the European Journal of Radiology.

PET/CT scans show value in patients with rare type of pancreatitis
F-18 FDG-PET/CT scans may help predict relapses in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis.
January 19, 2024
F-18 FDG-PET/CT images of patients. (A) Image of a 61-year-old male patient with type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) demonstrating diffuse enlargement of the pancreas (arrows). The serum IgG4 level was 2,260.0 mg/dL, and the TLG2.5 was 413.8 g/ml×cm3. According to the nomogram, his relapse probability is more than 95%. The patient discontinued steroid use during the maintenance phase, and 7 months later, he relapsed, with imaging showing diffuse re-enlargement of the pancreas. (B) Image of a 60-year-old male patient with type 1 AIP, showing focal enlargement in the head of the pancreas (arrows). The serum IgG4 level was 980 mg/dL, and the TLG2.5 was 92.7.0 g/ml×cm3. According to the nomogram, the patient’s relapse probability is less than 50%. After symptom relief, the patient did not receive maintenance treatment, and has been followed up for 4 years without relapse. Image courtesy of BMC Gastroenterology.

Can ictal SPECT make a comeback in epilepsy patients?
A feasibility study could revive interest in SPECT seizure imaging to help neurosurgeons guide brain surgery in epilepsy patients.
January 16, 2024
Schematic of triggered ictal SPECT and data processing. (A) Previously screened and selected sEEG bipolar contact is stimulated to trigger patient-typical seizure. Directly after seizure onset, confirmed through sEEG signals and semiology, systemic bolus of radiotracer (Tc-99m HMPAO) is administered. Planned SPECT is acquired within less than one hour. (B) Raw data processing from left to right (dataset from participant three as example). Postimplantation CT and preimplantation T1-weighted MRI are coregistered for sEEG lead localization. Raw SPECT images are coregistered to T1-weighted MRI sequence. SPECT deviation map is computed and anatomically colocalized with sEEG signals. Image courtesy of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
