The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) in April updated its 2026 Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology for Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis to include image-based AI risk assessment to identify women who may be at higher risk.
The NCCN has introduced a five-year breast risk threshold of 1.7% or greater from AI assessment for women at greater risk who may benefit from supplemental imaging.
Bethany Niell, MD, PhD, joins this week's episode to discuss the new guidance. She is vice chair of the NCCN Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis Panel. She is also a board-certified diagnostic radiologist at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL.
Bethany Niell, MD, PhD, shares her thoughts on how women can benefit from more accurate breast cancer risk assessment with AI assistance.
Niell also shares her thoughts on how breast cancer screening will look like in the future with AI assistance and how more data will lead to algorithms being validated in predicted five- and 10-year breast cancer risk.
Finally, Niell discusses current trends in AI and breast imaging and what imaging departments should consider when implementing AI into their workflows.
