FIGURE 2.1.2 Moderately active ulcerative colitis. Contrast-enhanced CT image (A) shows moderate colonic wall thickening and pericolonic inflammation. FDG PET image (B) from a second patient shows diffusely increased metabolic activity throughout the large intestine from pancolitis. Double-contrast BE images (C and D) from two different patients show multifocal ulceration and nodularity. The patulous ileocecal valve and mild inflammatory changes of the terminal ileum in D are features of "backwash ileitis." Colonoscopy images (E and F) from two different patients show more advanced mucosal inflammation, with focal ulcerations and purulent exudates.
