Women's Imaging MinnieCast, Episode 20: Could DBT performance inform age-based screening?

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) continues to grow in adoption in breast imaging facilities as researchers evaluate the modality's performance over conventional mammography.

A recent study published in Radiology sheds more light on how DBT works. The study found that DBT's performance improves with age; women in their 70s and 80s had higher cancer detection rates and lower abnormal interpretation rates compared to younger women.

Stamatia Destounis, MD, from Elizabeth Wende Breast Care in New York returns to the show to share what she and colleagues found in their study.

Stamatia Destounis, MD, shares her thoughts on what role DBT and other breast imaging modalities will have in the next 10 years.

Destounis wears many hats in radiology. She is a fellow of the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Society of Breast Imaging, and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. She also currently serves as Chair of the ACR Commission on Breast Imaging.

In this episode, she also discusses other considerations for DBT. These include when using the modality is appropriate in supplemental imaging, how AI may help or hurt DBT's performance, and what the future may hold for DBT for personalized breast care.
