Sanarus Medical of Pleasanton, CA, has introduced Centrica, a rotational core biopsy system. Centrica, which has received Food and Drug Administration clearance, allows for biopsies to be performed in a surgeon's office without general anesthesia or stitches, according to the company.
Performed through a 3-4 mm incision in the breast, a small needle is placed directly into the tissue under ultrasound visualization. Once placement is confirmed via ultrasound, the immobilized lesion is "stick frozen" to enable a large tissue sample to be removed for evaluation, according to Sanarus.
