Introducing point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in your hospital may sound exciting, but it requires support from multiple key stakeholders. These may include physicians from other specialties, administrators, and others.
A team at Nemours Children's Hospital successfully implemented a strategic governance and oversight framework to standardize POCUS use within the Nemours health system, which spans health centers in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
Lauren Averill, MD, from Nemours in Wilmington, DE, joins the show to talk about how she and colleagues developed and implemented the framework. She presented the team's findings at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) annual meeting in Philadelphia.
Lauren Averill, MD, explains what she and colleagues went through to develop their strategic governance and oversight framework for using POCUS within their health system.
Averill also shares how her hospital has embraced POCUS since the framework's rollout, observations she made at AIUM 2026, and pitfalls for imaging departments to avoid when trying to apply similar frameworks.
She also shares her thoughts on how POCUS is helping to improve care and the need for multidisciplinary collaboration to sustain POCUS use for proper patient care.
