Ultrasound MinnieCast, Episode 11 - Where are we with ABUS?

Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) is a useful tool in supplemental breast imaging, but it may be difficult to decide whether to use ABUS, MRI, or contrast-enhanced mammography CEM) when imaging women who need extra scans.

Georgia Spear, MD, from Northwestern University in Chicago joins the show to discuss ABUS' advantages and why different supplemental breast imaging options can work in harmony. 

At Northwestern, Spear is a professor of radiology at the Feinberg School of Medicine. She also serves as the chief of breast imaging at Northwestern Medicine. She also chairs the American College of Radiology’s Committee on Government Relations for Breast Imaging.

Georgia Spear, MD, talks about ABUS' overarching goal of helping women get their timely, accurate supplemental breast imaging exams.

Spear and colleagues also wrote a book titled, Automated Breast Ultrasound for Screening and Diagnosis. The book provides step-by-step guidance on performing and interpreting supine and prone patient automated screening and diagnostic breast studies.

For the show, Spear discusses the book, how she is implementing an ABUS program at Northwestern, and how laws mandating insurance coverage for supplemental breast imaging help women access ABUS and other imaging modalities.
