The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) is hosting its inaugural National Radiologic Technologist Day of Action on August 13, the 45th anniversary of the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act.
Society leaders are meeting elected officials in Washington, DC, to advocate for consistent education, training, and competency standards for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.
The Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act, signed into law in 1981, aimed to establish minimum federal standards for accreditation of education programs and certification in radiologic practice, but the standards were made voluntary and states were not required to adopt them, according to the ASRT. As a result, many states still do not require nationally recognized educational, training, and competency standards to practice as a medical imaging or radiation therapy professional, the society said.
