PA enacts licensure law for imaging, radiation therapy professionals

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) welcomes the signing of a bill that establishes a licensure and certification process in Pennsylvania for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed Senate Bill 1334 into law as Act 112 of 2026, the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Health and Safety Act.

The signing amends the state’s Medical Practice Act of 1985 and requires individuals who perform medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures to obtain licensure through the State Board of Medicine, ensuring they have met nationally recognized standards for education, training, and certification. The law covers radiography, MRI, limited practice, radiologist assistants, and nuclear medicine technology.

Sens. Lynda Culver (R-PA) and Nick Pisciottano (D-PA) introduced the bill in May 2026. It passed the Senate on June 30 and the House of Representatives on October 20 before Shapiro signed it on October 22.

The ASRT, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia societies of radiologic technologists advocated for the legislation.
