The American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) has bestowed three "excellence in radiology" honors at its annual meeting, which is being held in San Diego.
The society's gold medal was awarded to Ruth Carlos, MD, of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City and former ARRS president. She is currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Radiology; has served as co-chair of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Care Delivery Research (CCDR) Development Committee; and lends her expertise to the National Academy of Medicine, the National Quality Forum, and the Joint Commission. Her research has focused on health services and policy, health equity, structural racism, social genomics, the negative biological effects of social and economic marginalization, and imaging biomarkers.
The ARRS honored Tanya Mosely, MD, the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, with its Distinguished Educator award. Mosely previously served at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as director of its breast imaging fellowship program and helped create the first multivendor tomosynthesis certification course, according to the ARRS, as well as the society's Longitudinal Course Series. She is chair of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) National Mammography Quality Assurance Advisory Committee.
Finally, the society named Salvador Amézquita Pérez as an honorary member. Pérez is president of the Mexican Society of Radiology (SMRI) and Imaging. He is an army veteran and vascular and interventional radiologist with more than two decades of experience in clinical practice and medical education, the ARRS said, and has chaired the radiology and imaging department at Central Military Hospital in Mexico City since 2019.
