Health IT bill moves forward in U.S. Congress

Legislation that would promote the use of healthcare information technology passed out of a key subcommittee yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives.

H.R. 4157, the Health Information Technology Promotion Act of 2005, was on the winning end of an 8-5 vote in the health subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee. The legislation includes a number of provisions to promote healthcare IT deployment in the U.S., such as by establishing national standards on privacy and implementation of electronic health records, according to Kaisernetwork.org.

The bill would also make permanent the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, which was led by healthcare IT advocate Dr. David Brailer until he stepped down from the position on May 19.
