NCI's caBIG imaging group to hold first meeting

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) will host the first meeting this week of a new collaborative effort designed to improve the sharing of medical imaging technology and research data. The goal is to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer.

The NCI's cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) In Vivo Imaging Workspace group was formed in November to help coordinate and share medical imaging information related to cancer research. The imaging workspace group is the newest addition to the caBIG initiative, which is being developed by the NCI's Center for Bioinformatics to create a grid of research institutions and individuals that share data and tools over the Internet to help prevent and treat cancer.

The In Vivo Imaging Workspace group will hold its first meeting December 15-16 at the Hilton Inn at Penn on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Participation in the meeting is open to other cancer centers, medical institutions, academia, and industry, according to Dr. Eliot Siegel, NCI Workspace Lead.

At its first meeting, workspace participants are expected to discuss issues such as developing common imaging vocabularies, imaging standards for small-animal studies, and the development of a grid infrastructure to facilitate multisite imaging research and image processing.
