WHIA changes name, taps new board chair

Nonprofit group World Health Imaging Alliance (WHIA) of Chicago has changed its name and appointed a new board chair.

Now called the World Health Imaging, Telemedicine, and Informatics Alliance (WHITIA), the organization is expanding its mission to bring digital medical imaging technology to the developing world by also seeking to provide access to medical professionals and the use of health informatics.

WHITIA has also appointed Newton Minow, senior counsel at Sidley Austin, as chair of its board of directors. A former chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Minow has long been a champion of the use of telecommunications technology in the delivery of healthcare, and is known for his "Television and the Public Interest" speech, also known as the "Wasteland" speech, which he delivered in 1961.

Minow has served with numerous organizations including the Mayo Clinic, where he is a trustee emeritus; the RAND Corporation, where he served as chair; the Carnegie Foundation; and the Public Broadcasting Service, where he also served as chair. He currently serves as vice chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates and as a life trustee at Northwestern University and the University of Notre Dame.
