NEMA releases update to DICOM standard

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) of Rosslyn, VA, has released a 16-part update to the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard.

The update includes a number of new features, according to DICOM user co-chair Dr. Peter Mildenberger, professor of radiology at University Hospital Mainz in Germany. It includes dose reporting for radiation exposure, which is expected to improve the documentation and quality of procedures, he said.

The update also includes a CT/MR cardiovascular analysis report for improving workflow in computer-based evaluation, and new compression algorithms for PACS and teleradiology. Individual DICOM documents can be purchased separately, or the entire set can be purchased for $999 by clicking here.
