LightLab starts U.S. clinical trials

LightLab Imaging has launched the first round of human cardiovascular studies using the company’s optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI.

The Westford, MA-based firm has designed a device to acquire in vivo microscopic images of human intracoronary plaque. The OCT platform uses photonics and signal-processing techniques, along with a single strand of 0.006-inch optical fiber, which enables clinicians to study plaques in vivo for the first time, according to the company.

The system will also be used to enable better deployment of cardiac therapies such as stent placements in selected patients undergoing interventional procedures, according to study leader Dr. David Williams. The company’s cardiology products are not commercially available and are currently pending FDA 510(k) clearance
