Radiology decision support and computerized physician-order entry (CPOE) developer Medicalis of Kitchener, OR, will showcase its Percipio application and will introduce two new extensions to its product line.

Percipio is a Web-based enterprise application that allows physicians to place imaging orders with the help of real-time decision support. Percipio captures requisition information in advance and disseminates order information to the departments and organizations that execute radiology orders. Its decision-support capabilities allow order fillers to educate order placers on the latest protocols and most appropriate exams to consider given the patient's condition, the company said.

The Percipio Radiology Benefits Management product is an extension of Percipio for medical management. Many managed care companies have recently enacted prior-authorization programs, which require ordering physicians to call a medical management company prior to placing an order, typically used only for advanced imaging tests such as CT or MR.

The Radiology Benefits Management product applies payor guidelines to Precipio and essentially preauthorizes the exams while ordering. If the selected exam meets payor criteria, the system will automatically authorize the exam and send a request to the payor for an authorization number which will be applied to the order, according to Medicalis.

The Intelligo Interface Engine integrates Percipio to any number of clinical systems in an enterprise deployment capable of multiple protocols and message throughputs at the regional healthcare information organization (RHIO) level. Intelligo has the capability to take input from any protocol (HL7, XML, EDI, SQL), transform the message or message elements to a format suitable for the outbound system, and send it back out at high throughput, the developer said. 

Intelligo is particularly useful for organizations that have multiple systems with multiple patient identifiers. For example, Medicalis said, some medical record numbers (MRNs) are eight digits, some 10, some require lead alpha characters that denote the original issuer, and the lead characters change when amalgamated into the enterprise. Intelligo's message-mapping capabilities transform these disparate elements into the correct format for each receiving system.
