Film digitizer manufacturer Howtek experienced a tough second quarter (end-June 30), due to declining sales in the Hudson, NH, company's prepress graphic arts business and lower revenues in its medical imaging segment.
For the period, Howtek reported revenues of $932,000, down 52% compared with sales of $2 million in the same period of 2000. The company's net loss for the most recent quarter rose to $798,000, compared with a net loss of $258,000 in the corresponding quarter a year ago.
Howtek said the lower numbers reflect the company's decision to exit the prepress graphic arts market and concentrate on its medical and photographic imaging and digitization markets. As a result, sales in the graphic arts segment declined by $950,000 in the quarter.
In medical imaging, Howtek's numbers were affected by what it called the softening of the PACS and telemedicine markets as customer purchases are deferred or reconsidered due to the decline of the economy. Howtek's medical sales fell from $628,000 in Q2 2000 to $513,000 in Q2 2001, the company said.
