Clinical rules reduce need for CTPA during pregnancy
Using a set of clinical rules, researchers from the Netherlands and France helped nearly 40% of pregnant women suspected of having a pulmonary embolism avoid an unnecessary CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) exam, according to a study published in the March 21 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Earlier colon screening saves lives -- but at what cost?
Lowering the starting age for colorectal cancer screening from 50 to 45 is a cost-effective strategy to reduce cancer deaths, but improving uptake among those currently eligible would provide even greater benefits, according to U.S. researchers who used a math model to project the outcomes in a study published March 28 in Gastroenterology.

GTC: Topol sees AI fostering empathy in healthcare
SAN JOSE, CA - The ever-expanding clinical application of artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the face of healthcare -- not only extending the scale of medicine's influence on society but also fostering deeper empathy among clinicians, Dr. Eric Topol said in a March 19 talk at the GPU Technology Conference (GTC).

ACC: Study promotes routine PET/CT CAC for cardiac risk
Should coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring be a routine part of PET/CT stress testing for assessing an individual's risk of heart disease? Yes, according to researchers from Utah who explained why in a Saturday presentation at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2019 meeting in New Orleans.

Cardiac risk grows with higher coronary calcium scores
Individuals with high CT coronary artery calcium scores -- at least 1,000 Agatston units -- had a substantially greater risk of all-cause mortality than those with lower scores and nearly triple the risk of those with a score of 0, according to research published online March 15 in JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging.

Risk prediction model boosts accuracy of CT lung screening
Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh developed a statistical model that combined data from CT scans with patient demographic information to predict an individual's risk of lung cancer on CT lung screening exams. The model worked better than several more-established methods, according to an article published online March 12 in Thorax.

Doctors aren't discussing CT lung screening with patients
When it comes to CT lung cancer screening, physicians are missing a golden opportunity to reach out to high-risk individuals -- only discussing the test with less than 20% of patients who are current and former smokers, according to an article published online March 9 in the Journal of Cancer Education.
