3D DEXA enhances hip fracture risk prediction
Combining math-based models with 3D dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) models of the femur enabled clinicians to predict an individual's risk of hip fracture with an accuracy greater than that of standard DEXA and comparable to CT, according to an article published in the April issue of Bone.

CT system developers utilize AI to boost patient care
Disease detection with CT has benefited greatly from advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) software during the past year. To make the case at the ECR 2019 technical exhibition, many vendors are dedicating their CT booth presentations to the integration of AI into the modality. The rewards for patient care are visible for all delegates to see during this week's congress.

Dose monitoring optimizes whole-body CT in Italy
By monitoring CT dose and adjusting protocols at their institution, researchers from Italy were able to identify the optimal parameters for reducing cancer patients' exposure to radiation from whole-body CT exams, without lowering image quality. They presented their findings on Wednesday at ECR 2019 in Vienna.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
