Iterative reconstruction cuts CT dose for urinary stone disease
Iterative reconstruction allows steep CT radiation dose reductions in urolithiasis imaging without loss of image quality or diagnostic confidence, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital have found. The results may help allay fears of potentially excessive radiation in these oft-repeated scans.

CCTA equal to cardiac cath for guiding CAD therapy choices
Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) was nearly perfectly in line with cardiac catheterization in its selection of therapies for patients with a high likelihood of coronary artery disease (CAD), according to a new study in Radiology. The results showed that CCTA can determine patient management as well as invasive angiography while sparing many patients from invasive procedures, researchers said.

Algorithm boosts temporal resolution in CCTA
Today's cardiac CT is more robust than ever, broadening the range of patients who can be imaged. One new tool improves all-important temporal resolution even in midrange scanners. The software creates a hybrid sample of image data to improve temporal resolution in cardiac CT angiography (CCTA) images of obese patients.

Physician education busts inappropriate CCTA use
A study of more than 25,000 patients in Michigan shows that inappropriate use of coronary CT angiography (CCTA) can be drastically curtailed by educating the doctors who order heart scans, according to results published on August 8 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Modular training software teaches techs the art of VC
A new software-based training tool from the University of Chicago promises to train CT technologists in the complex procedure of virtual colonoscopy -- minus the image interpretation. The tool could help meet training needs should virtual colonoscopy come into widespread use for colorectal cancer screening.

Japanese team finds more flat polyps with virtual colonoscopy
Flat colorectal lesions aren't easy to detect at virtual colonoscopy. But a group from Japan did quite well finding them after patients underwent bowel cleansing and automated insufflation before CT scanning, according to a new study in Acta Radiologica.

Imaging shows how yoga injuries affect tendons, cartilage
Yoga, that poetic and wildly popular integration of human body, breath, and mind that has swept the U.S. in recent years, does cause musculoskeletal problems, though rarely, according to a new study published in the August American Journal of Roentgenology that used imaging to assess yoga injuries.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
