CTA protocol slashes radiation dose tenfold in aortic disease
A novel CT angiography (CTA) technique using nongated high-pitch images and iterative reconstruction delivered diagnostic scans across the board at about one-tenth the dose of standard exams, along with fewer motion artifacts and lower contrast media requirements, concludes a new study in Academic Radiology.

CT reveals cardioembolic stroke that echo misses
Echocardiography may be the de facto gold standard for cardiac evaluation of patients suspected of having cardioembolic stroke, but it isn't necessarily the best modality. A new study from Saudi Arabia used CT to discover several thrombi that echo had missed, along with other conditions.

No cost difference between CTC, colonoscopy in elderly
A new analysis of Medicare data has found that after adjusting for patient demographic factors, costs are pretty much the same in the year following an initial screening exam for colorectal cancer, regardless of whether CT colonography (CTC) or optical colonoscopy is used, according to a report in Academic Radiology.

LevelCheck algorithm targets wrong-site spinal surgery
A new algorithm called LevelCheck -- designed to prevent wrong-site spinal surgery -- boasted near-perfect accuracy in a trial by Johns Hopkins University researchers. By matching preoperative CT scans to intraoperative radiographs, LevelCheck confirms for surgeons that they are targeting the correct vertebral level.

Half of positive SPECT patients negative at CCTA
Nearly half of all patients who test positive on SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging are found to be negative at coronary CT angiography (CCTA), calling into question the routine use of SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging, a test that has been a mainstay of the diagnostic workup of patients with a clinical suspicion of coronary artery disease.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
