Road to RSNA 2015: CT Preview
As RSNA 2015 turns a sprightly 101 this year, CT continues to pull tricks out of what always seems like its bottomless hat. In 2015, the all-purpose modality is doing its old tricks better than ever, and it's pulling off some new ones that hadn't seen much play before. Highlights this year include x-ray phase-contrast CT, an investigational photon-counting CT scanner, lung cancer screening, and new and improved iterative reconstruction techniques.

JNCI: CT screening beneficial in shorter-term smokers
Data from a large study show that CT lung cancer screening may benefit even those with fewer than 30 pack-years of smoking history, according to an October 19 article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The findings could potentially open up screening to millions more smokers, especially women and minorities.

Study: Skip CT in most blunt emergency trauma cases
Doctors can safely forego CT imaging in more than one-third of emergency blunt trauma cases by using clinical criteria to assess patients rather than automatically sending them to imaging, according to a study of more than 11,000 patients that was published October 6 in PLOS Medicine.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.

Adding MBI to DBT finds more breast cancers
By Amerigo Allegretto
Adding molecular breast imaging (MBI) to DBT screening leads to more invasive cancers detected in women with dense breasts.
September 23, 2025
Images in a 62-year-old woman who presented for screening. (A) Image from DBT screening (the synthesized 2D mediolateral oblique view of the left breast is shown) at year on was interpreted as negative and showing heterogeneously dense breast. (B) Image from molecular breast imaging screening (mediolateral oblique view) at year one reveals a 0.9-cm non-mass focal area of uptake in the left breast (arrow). (C) Targeted ultrasound scan (transverse image) shows a suspicious mass in the 3-o’clock position of the left breast, 4 cm from the nipple. Ultrasound-guided core biopsy and lumpectomy revealed a 0.9-cm grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, an estrogen receptor–negative, progesterone receptor–negative, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative lesion, with two sentinel nodes negative (N0).
