Women's Imaging MinnieCast, Episode 13: Partial breast irradiation in the spotlight

Partial breast irradiation (PBI) in recent years has emerged as a focused treatment option for women with breast cancer.

Recent studies suggest that PBI is effective in treating HR+ cancers while accelerated PBI can treat ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).

This episode's guests include Simona Shaitelman, MD, from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Janice Lyons, MD, from University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center in Ohio. Both are part of the American Society for Radiation Oncology's (ASTRO's) guideline committee for PBI.

Janice Lyons, MD (first speaker), and Simona Shaitelman, MD (second speaker), describe which women and which cancer cases are appropriate for treatment with PBI.

The two discuss how they use PBI in practice, which patients are the best candidates for PBI, how patients benefit from this treatment option, and what recent research has to say.

They also discuss how AI could further improve PBI and how PBI is now the default approach in some patients.
