A study published August 7 in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that elderly women who undergo routine screening mammography are more at risk of breast cancer overdiagnosis.

Debate has persisted among breast imagers when it comes to screening elderly women who may not experience breast cancer symptoms within their lifetime. The study, led by Ilana Richman, MD, from Yale University, found that women ages 85 and older have an overdiagnosis rate of up to 54%.

Richman spoke with AuntMinnie.com about how her team's results suggest more tailored, personalized breast cancer screening in these women.
