Ultrasound developer U-Systems of Sunnyvale, CA, has announced that the Breast Care Center at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula will serve as the initial site in California to participate in a national study of breast cancer screening sponsored by the company.
The somo-InSIGHT study is designed to evaluate whether digital mammography in combination with the company's somo.v automated breast ultrasound system (ABUS) is more sensitive in detecting breast lesions than mammography alone for women with dense breasts. The study design anticipates 20,000 women enrollees to determine the efficacy of using both imaging techniques for this specific group of women.
Dr. Susan Roux, medical director of the Breast Care Center and principal investigator for the study at the hospital, explained that she believes early detection is critical in breast cancer outcomes and noted it is more difficult to image tumors in women with dense breasts.
