The Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) has issued guidelines on how to manage mammography programs in the wake of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina.
The agency's recommendations lay out ways for screening centers to remain compliant with the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) while contending with damages from a natural disaster. These include recording the date range for which facility records (e.g., quality control records, patient logs) and patient records and/or mammogram films have been lost or damaged, as well as methods for informing patients of these issues. Also, equipment must be thoroughly inspected by a medical physicist before the center can resume operations.
