Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems and breast biopsy tools were the new technologies most frequently invested in by U.S. cancer centers, according to a survey by the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC).
The Rockville, MD-based organization surveyed 120 hospital cancer programs and oncology private practices about their breast care programs and services. The results of the survey showed that 87% of the centers nationwide offered a comprehensive breast care program with prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliation components. In addition, 60% stated that their institution had a separate facility for their breast care patients.
Twenty-seven percent of the centers reported that they purchased CAD systems in 2002, with 21% reporting that they bought biopsy tools.
