Sectra buys Mamea

Swedish PACS and digital mammography developer Sectra has moved to increase its focus on mammography, acquiring nearly all the shares of its digital mammography development partner Mamea Imaging.

Sectra purchased 60,000 shares of Mamea, upping its ownership stake from 38% to 95%. The purchase price amounts to $3.9 million (U.S.), but also includes a supplemental purchase price tied to positive business development, Sectra said.

That price could reach a maximum of $6.4 million (U.S.), based on future sales of the mammography system, according to the Linkoping-based vendor. Sectra said it intends to pay for the acquisition with its own shares.

Mamea was formed in 1999 by researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and Sectra. It currently has 32 employees, with no sales and an operating loss of $193,000 (U.S.) for the 2002/2003 financial year. The sellers are three of Mamea's founders, who will continue to work for the new Sectra subsidiary.

(C) Recombined MLO and (D) CC images show an enhancing mass in the medial left breast (arrows). Biopsy revealed invasive lobular carcinoma. Size was 0.2 cm; tumor grade II/III; negative lymph nodes; and estrogen receptor–positive, progesterone receptor–positive, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative.

A normal mammogram confirmed by three-year radiologic follow-up illustrates reader-marked regions of interest (ROIs) during (A) unaided (round 1) and (B) artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted (round 2) reading. Each colored dot represents an ROI for recall by a human reader. Readers could mark more than one ROI per case, represented by multiple dots of the same color. During AI-assisted reading, the AI system displayed three visible prompts: two with suspicion of malignancy scores of 35% (left mediolateral oblique [L MLO] and craniocaudal [L CC]) and one with a suspicion of malignancy score of 10% (right craniocaudal [R CC]), shown as polygonal overlays.
