IMS (Internazionale Medico Scientifica) of Bologna, Italy said it has begun the first clinical trial of its new full-field digital mammography system, known as Giotto Image MD.
The 9-month trial will include at least 500 patients at the Ospedale Maggiore of Bologna, and will be led by breast specialist Dr. Gianni Saguatti, IMS said.
IMS marketing director Achille Albanese told AuntMinnie.com that the firm has been developing the scanner since 1996. Giotto Image MD relies on amorphous selenium-based digital detector technology developed by detector manufacturer and Analogic subsidiary Anrad (formerly Noranda) of St. Laurent, Canada.
IMS gained its first experience in digital mammography with the spot digital stereotactic Prone biopsy unit it developed together with Tucson, AZ-based Medoptics, Albanese said.
