Dear AuntMinnie Member,
A new study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's (ASCO) Breast Cancer Symposium had some unkind words to say about breast MRI.
The study examined women with newly diagnosed breast cancer and found that breast MRI resulted in delayed treatment for many women who had to schedule and wait for appointments. The researchers also were critical of breast MRI's inability to reduce mastectomy rates -- get more details by clicking here.
While the results appear negative, they highlight the importance of making wise use of the modality. As explained in our recent Advances in Breast MRI Special Report, breast MRI can be effective when it's offered at a comprehensive breast facility, where women can get a breast MRI scan far more quickly than at traditional centers.
