The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) has published an updated practice guideline on venous-origin chronic pelvic pain in women.
Venous-origin chronic pelvic pain refers specifically to that caused by pelvic venous hypertension and is recognized as a clinical presentation within the broader pelvic venous disorders, noted the authors of the update led by Claire Kaufman, MD, of the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine in Portland.
Some reports suggest that up to one-third of women with chronic pelvic pain may have a venous etiology, noted Kaufman and colleagues from the Women’s Health Clinical Specialty Council and Venous Clinical Specialty Council workgroup.
The document, published March 3 in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, serves as a summary of what is required to treat women with this condition, including preprocedural imaging, treatment options, complication management, and follow-up care.
