GE Capital and GE Healthcare have taken a stake in Check-Cap, an Israeli developer of an ingestible imaging capsule designed to help detect colorectal cancer.
With the goal of helping patients avoid the discomfort of traditional colonoscopies, Check-Cap's disposable capsule will require no bowel cleaning and no hospital visit, while imaging the colon in 3D.
GE's investment was made through its Healthymagination Fund, an equity fund that invests in promising healthcare technology companies.
In addition to the financial investment, GE and Check-Cap have also signed a development and supply agreement. GE Healthcare Israel will develop, design, and produce miniature cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) diagnostic imaging sensors inside each Check-Cap capsule, allowing clinicians to obtain 360° imaging as the capsule travels in the colon, the companies said.
Check-Cap is planning to debut the capsule in the European Union in late 2013, subject to CE Mark receipt. The company said it's also discussing appropriate clinical activities to support U.S. marketing clearance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
