Dr. Joseph Schmitt has been named chief technology officer of LightLab Imaging, a Westford, MA-based developer of optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems. Dr. Schmitt will lead the firm's efforts to further develop its ultra-high resolution OCT technology, and optimize its potential in areas such as Doppler, spectroscopy, and tissue polarization effects, according to LightLab. The firm's products are currently pending 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration, LightLab said.

Dr. Schmitt comes to LightLab from contrast media developer Mallinckrodt of St. Louis, where he was a staff scientist in charge of developing noninvasive blood monitoring utilizing optical technologies. He was previously a staff member of the National Institute of Health's Lasers and Modern Optics Group, according to LightLab.
