Podcast: Frank Lexa discusses the 3 major trends facing radiology today

Some radiologists have found niches where they can provide better service for the needs of their local community and local physicians, according to Frank Lexa, MD, guest on Episode 21 of the Keeping Up With the Radiologists Podcast on the AuntMinnie Podcast Network.

With host Penn Radiology's Saurabh (Harry) Jha, MD, Lexa talks about how business, policy, and technology have reshaped radiology over the past three decades.

The neuroradiologist, radiology practice strategist, and former leader of the Radiology Leadership Institute explains his early experience commercializing technology developed during fellowship -- that led him into consulting, venture capital, and eventually a long faculty role helping expand Wharton’s Global Consulting Practicum internationally.

The discussion centers on three major trends facing radiology today:

  1. Economic pressure and practice consolidation
  2. Private equity in radiology
  3. Commoditization of radiology services

Lexa also warns that teleradiology and virtual meetings are threatening not only strategic discussion but mentorship and networking in radiology. He argues that relationships, local knowledge, and direct dialogue remain essential to radiology’s professional identity and value.

"Quality and service still matter, but I think beyond that, it's really about the non-RVUs," says Lexa. "I think once you reduce this to RVU producers, then that starts to really look more like commoditization. ... I think that there still are opportunities to avoid commoditization."
