The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) on June 5 will host a Capitol Hill briefing on prostate health to highlight the value of prostate artery embolization (PAE).

Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-NJ), chair of the Congressional Men's Health Caucus, will speak on a panel with Shivank Bhatia, MD, and Bruce Kava, MD, both of the University of Miami, as well as a patient whose benign prostatic hyperplasia was treated successfully with PAE.

PAE is a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that affects about 70% of men over the age of 60. During the procedure, an interventional radiologist injects tiny particles into arteries that feed the prostate gland. This reduces its blood supply and thus shrinks it, the SIR said.
