DR Systems unveils cloud-based eMix

PACS software developer DR Systems of San Diego has developed cloud computing technology designed to share imaging studies and reports.

Called eMix (electronic medical information exchange), the new technology is an interoperable, vendor-neutral method designed to eliminate the need for hospitals or imaging providers to burn CDs, print films, or fax reports, according to DR Systems.

Scheduled to be unveiled at RSNA 2009, the company is touting eMix's security features, which provide access authorization while an audit trail is created. No patient information resides on the eMix servers, to enable compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Another advantage of eMix is that the technology offers opportunities both to reduce operating costs and generate revenue. Because no hard copies of images or reports are required, media and personnel costs are reduced. By a minimal fee for eMix access, revenue generation is possible.

Cloud computing technology affords an exchange of imaging data in real-time, without the need for hardware of software purchase, according to the company.
