Emageon teams with Dell on RadSuite Express

Image management firm Emageon unveiled its new RadSuite Express product, designed for small to mid-size hospitals with volumes of fewer than 80,000 radiology studies per year.

The Birmingham, AL-based company will team with Dell Computer of Round Rock, TX, which will provide the technology for the Web-enabled, single-server software program.

Emageon and Dell made the joint announcement on the opening day of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine's (SIIM) 2007 annual meeting in Providence, RI.

Emageon chairman and CEO Charles Jett estimated that some 3,600 healthcare facilities in the U.S. fall into the category of 200 beds or fewer. Those hospitals "as of yet, have not had the appropriate tools and architecture delivered to them in this pricing and package setup. We believe this enables small hospitals across the country to take advantage of the same kind of tool sets (as) the leading hospitals."

Scott Jenkins, director of healthcare solution sets for Dell Computer, said this venture with Emageon is the company's first major step to become more involved in the healthcare arena.

RadSuite Express uses the basics of Emageon's enterprise technology. The difference is that RadSuite Express' highly standardized configuration will not offer certain options, such as the ability to customize hanging protocols.

Jett said healthcare providers "will be able to access the technology on a per-study basis without necessarily having the full capital purchase upfront." Images up to one year old will be stored onsite, while older images will be archived offsite. Emageon also will offer Web-based training and onsite consulting for an additional fee.

The companies' two sales teams will jointly market RadSuite Express. The companies currently are taking orders on the product, with plans to start shipping in the third quarter.
